How can I save on my supermarket shopping?

You don't have to buy excess inventory just to save money on your food bill.

Keep an eye out for loyalty programs in stores – for example, Tesco has its Clubcard program which allows you to buy selected products at a discounted rate.

You will see yellow tags under prizes where there is a subsequent Clubcard prize.

And every time you spend €1 in store and online, you get one point when you scan your card or app.

There's also the Asda Rewards program which allows you to collect Asda pounds and use them to get cash from your store.

One customer saved as much as $40 just by using this scheme.

Subsidies are also available through, for example, the Household Support Fund, which ends this month.

It's where local councils hand out their share of a huge £421 million government pot to local residents – each council deciding what it's for and who needs it.

Many offer food stamps to cash-strapped families, but it's best to contact your local council to see what's offered and if you qualify.

Call your local council if you are unsure of what is offered. You can find it using the municipal tracker on the government website.
