However, posting in the Gardening Tips and Tips On the Facebook group, one expert said this can even be harmful to plants, and shared a non-toxic solution.

He said: “Spraying with household soap can be very damaging to plants as it damages the waxy cuticles on the leaf surfaces, causing the plant to lose water more quickly and often die.

The gardening professional said to make a garlic spray instead.

He said: “Garlic is poisonous to insects and it also helps prevent bacteria and harmful fungi from damaging your plants.

“Making your own garlic spray is very easy and a great organic tool for a healthy garden, and it does not impart garlic flavor to edible crops.

“It is also the most effective biological control method for dealing with snails.”

To make the spray, the gardener said all you need to do is boil two garlic bulbs in water until soft.

Dilute two tablespoons of the mixture with five liters of water and put it in a syringe or watering can.

Spray your plants every week and the insects should disappear.

Garlic is super cheap and you can buy two bulbs at the supermarket for about 50 cents, so this insect repellent mixture is incredibly affordable.
