I spent almost $1,000 on Honkai: Star Rail – and I still didn't get what I wanted

LIVE SERVICE games are one of the most popular types of games right now as people love coming back to the game every month.

Some of these live service games are called gacha games, where you spend virtual currency hoping to get the characters you want.

The best-known games in the industry at the moment are Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail from HoYoverse.

Both games feature Banners where players spend virtual money in the hopes of being rewarded with high-level characters and weapons to play with.

We were fortunate to have access to a preview server for the Honkai: Star Rail 2.0 update before the public launch.

Together with this special account we had unlocked almost everything, including new characters like Black Swan and Misha.

The account also contained 50k Stellar Jade, the in-game currency used to purchase Warps for a chance to win new characters and weapons.

We managed to collect an additional 17,000 Stellar Jade simply by playing the game, which earned us $830 (£635) in in-game currency to spin the wheel with.

This amounts to 419 turns of the gacha machine, hoping to pull some of the best items, four- and five-star weapons, and characters.

In 419 plays, we received 67 four- and five-star draws, 35 four-star characters, 16 four-star weapons, six five-star characters, and no five-star weapons.

This is actually above average luck, as you are only promised a five-star drop once in 90 times.

With limited banners such as Black Swan, you can only be sure of this after 180 pulls.

Another colleague also spent the 50,000 Stellar Jade on pulls and only received one five-star character.

These results show that those hoping to retire their beloved temporary characters may end up spending their savings.
