Full timeline of Justin and Hailey Bieber’s relationship: From the pair’s first meeting in 2009 to more than five years of marriage together

Stephen Baldwin asked the public to for pray for his daughter Hailey Bieber and son-in-law Justin, sending fans into a state of concern.

On Monday, the 57-year-old Usual Suspects alum reposted an Instagram video of Justin singing, which was shared by All Things Possible Ministries founder Victor Marx and captioned: ‘Christians please when you think of Justin & Hailey, take a moment to offer a little prayer for them to have wisdom, protection, and draw close to the Lord.’

The 58-year-old evangelist had written that his wife Eileen Marx and Hailey’s mother Kennya Deodato Baldwin ‘pray often together’ for the married couple of five years. 

Following the comments from Hailey’s father, MailOnline takes a look at hers and Justin’s relationship, from their first meeting in 2009 to now being married for over five years. 

Here is all you need to know about the couple’s time together.  

2009

Justin and Hailey meet for the first time, with Justin aged 14 and Hayley aged 12. 

A video recorded at the time, captures a shy and young Hailey shaking hands with the pop sensation after they were introduced to one another by Hailey’s father Stephen. 

They are then to be quickly shaking hands with one another after the round of introductions by Stephen.  

At the time, Hailey has bright blonde hair and is wearing makeup, clad in a brown sweater.

Bieber has his full early years hairdo in perfect place with the locks pulled toward his face. The Beauty And A Beat singer is dressed in a leather jacket and beige shirt.

It is not know where exactly the two of them first met, but it appears to be a movie premiere.

2015-2016

While they frequented similar social circles after their first meeting in 2009, it was not until 2015 that it was clear they were more than friends.

The duo rang in 2016 together with a vacation to Anguilla, where Justin posted a photo of them sharing a kiss.

Around this time, the couple acknowledged they were seeing each other, without being in an exclusive relationship.

‘We are not an exclusive couple,’ Hailey told E! at the time.

Justin also admitted Hailey was someone he ‘really’ loved, but that he was not quite ready to devote himself to a relationship.

‘What if Hailey ends up being the girl I’m gonna marry, right? If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it’s always gonna be damaged,’ he told GQ.

This saw Justin briefly move on from Hailey to have a short relationship with Sofia Richie.

2017

After being introduced by their managers in 2009, Selena and Justin made their public debut as a couple at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in February 2011.

‘We were so in love. Nothing else mattered,’ Bieber told Complex in 2015 about his and Gomez’s relationship, referring to it a ‘marriage kind of thing.’

They dated on and off until 2014 before reuniting for a short while in 2017 but split for good in 2018. 

In an interview with Billboard, Selena admitted she never stopped caring for Justin.

‘I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life,’ she said. ‘So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right.

‘But that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away.’

2018

Justin and Hailey then started dating one another. 

The lovebirds were often pictured packing on the PDA for all to see throughout New York City.

July 2018

Just over a month after reigniting their romance, the couple were engaged. 

Justin proposed to Hailey during a romantic getaway to the Bahamas with a massive diamond ring.

‘My heart is COMPLETELY and FULLY YOURS,’ gushed the pop star in a romantic social media gesture to confirm the news. 

The niece of Alec Baldwin received a large, oval-shaped diamond engagement ring from Justin when they were on holiday in the Bahamas to mark the occasion.

September 2018

Justin married Hailey at a courthouse in New York City.

The couple exchanged vows on the same day they obtained their marriage licence at the courthouse on September 13, TMZ claimed at the time.

The couple had a preacher on hand, Jeffrey Quinn, a member of the faculty at Nyack College near the courthouse, while the Baby hitmaker’s friend Josh Mehl was the witness at the ceremony.

September 2019

The couple tied the knot again in front of friends and family at the luxury Montage Palmetto Bluffs resort in South Carolina on September 30, 2019.

August 2020

Although the couple had been married for less than a year at this point, Hailey was keen to give her outlook on how she and Justin might raise their own children should they choose to have any in the future. 

She told Vogue India: ‘They will be raised knowing how to treat people, why we don’t say certain things, and why we respect and acknowledge and give credit where credit is due.’

November 2021

Hailey and Justin appear on the In Good Faith with Chelsea & Judah Smith podcast, where they discussed the trials and tribulations they faced in their first year of marriage. 

At the time, Justin was battling with severe bouts of depression, which saw Hailey concede that watching her partner having to deal with mental health issues was a difficult experience for her. 

‘There were days where I literally was like, “I don’t know if he’s going to be okay.” Something really deep down inside of me was like, “He’s going to get through it.” I just didn’t know how long it was going to take. That’s what I think was the hardest thing. There’s no guarantees,’ she said.

Nevertheless, Hailey was determined to stick by her husband, adding: ‘Imagine abandoning somebody in the middle of the worst time of their life, potentially. I’m not that type of person’.

February 2022

Hailey shares that she has refrained from discussing her marriage in interviews. 

‘It doesn’t feel worth it to me anymore. ‘I try to have an open conversation with someone, and then it gets taken out of context,’ she told WSJ Magazine. 

March 2022

Hailey suffered an alarming health scare and was hospitalised after having stroke-like symptoms, but was able to make a full recovery. 

Understandably, the incident left left Justin in shock with a source close to the couple telling People: ‘[He] is probably more traumatised than even she is. When it happened, there was a lot of panic. 

‘Justin texted everyone he knew and asked everyone to pray for her, and he never left her side. He was saying that he can’t lose her, that whatever it takes, he wanted the best medical treatment available.’

Justin subsequently addressed situation during one of his concerts. ‘You know, it’s kind of crazy how life throws you curveballs,’ he said during a Denver performance.

‘Most of you probably know or seen the news about my wife …but she’s okay, she’s good, she’s strong. It’s been really scary. But I know for a fact that God has her in the palms of his hands, and that’s a good thing.’

June 2022

Just months after Hailey was hospitalised, Justin had a health scare of his own. 

After contracting symptoms of a virus known as Ramsay Hunt syndrome, half the singer’s face was left paralysed, but he made a full recovery. 

A source told People that although 2022 was an ‘overwhelming’ year for the couple, they were seemingly able to work through tough period, with the source describing their relationship as ‘unbreakable.’

February 2023

As part of a piece for Vogue Australia, Justin interviewed Hailey, which saw him include a question asking her what her favourite aspect of marriage is. 

She said: ‘My favorite thing about being married is honestly the companionship I feel we have.

‘Genuinely, you are my best friend in the entire world. There’s nobody I would rather spend more time with or do anything with,’ Hailey added.

August 2023

Amid reports of Justin possibly splitting from longterm manager Scooter Braun, a source told Page Six on August 20 that Hailey was playing a bigger role in his business affairs.

‘Hailey has taken control and is heavily involved. She’s a part of meetings and she’s talking a lot for him,’ the source said. ‘She’s the voice. They’re becoming this power couple. She’s a big part of everything he’s doing.’

September 2023

The Biebers marked their fifth wedding anniversary with Instagram tributes to one another, with Hailey writing a short but poignant messaging, posting: ‘5. I love you.’

Justin left a longer message in homage to his partner, penning: ‘To the most precious, my beloved. 5 years. You have captivated my heart. I know from the depths of my soul down to my bones that this journey with you will only exceed our wildest expectations. So let’s keep dreaming big baby. Cheers to forever and ever. I love you with every fibre of my being. HAPPY 5TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!’

February 2024

On Valentine’s Day, a source told Entertainment Tonight how marriage has been extremely important to the couple. 

The source said: ‘Hailey and Justin are doing well. ‘Justin feels comfortable, safe, secure, and at home with Hailey, which is great for him. Hailey is extremely supportive and encouraging and vice versa. They lift each other up in their careers and personal lives.’

‘Hailey and Justin actively commit themselves to be better partners and make sure to share their feelings openly,’ the source added. 

‘They are very committed to one another and take their vows seriously.’
